Chinese still Support BN

The victory of DAP in Sibu parliamentarian by-election does not represent Sibuan support for opposition but it does implicate that the Sarawakians are no longer fixed deposit for the Barisan Nasional.

The impact of the defeat means the beginning ultimate down fall of SUPP should no remedy is taken seriously.

Other than national and local issues, how much SUPP can fight for the Chinese interests remains questionable.

Ironically, Chinese are not voting opposition parties, but they are protesting the policies being implemented. The protests are actually a protest against the policies that are unfavorable to them. The by-election voting pattern clearly reflects this social attitude.

The assumption by the Chinese that the government had neglected the community in terms of education although was unfounded but is increasingly being seen as the result of the Chinese base party is not fighting for the Chinese.

In the many by-elections held after the 12th general election especially the latest in Sibu, the strategy used by BN is to allocate special allocation for Chinese and mission schools.

Unsurprisingly, this strategy doesn't seem to be working well out for BN, it did not swing their votes as expected. The BN is most unlikely to benefit from an increase but managed to prevent the decrease further in its support as the Chinese did not seem to increase their support to BN either.

On the other hand, should the strategy not being used, there might be more swing in the Chinese votes towards opposition.

The RM18 million benefited the schools are as follows:

RM10 million for 60 Chinese Medium primary schools,
RM5 million for Chinese Medium Secondary Schools,
RM2 million for SMK Sacred Heart
RM1 million for St Mary

Undeniably, the RM18 million special by-election allocations is timely and it does help to ease the financial burden of Chinese medium schools in Sibu, but the electoral result shown that it did not swing the votes back to BN.

Although in appreciation, but the voters in Sibu did not express their gratitude by voting SUPP over the RM18 million allocations given by Najib. It seems that the event is overtaken by issues.

The crux of the matter is that though it is true that the allocation is timely and by far needed by Sibu Chinese community, but how about other schools in other areas? It was claimed that it does; however, appeared that the government had neglected the community especially in terms of education.

The allocation strategy during the by-election claimed to be implicated that the government constantly show negative allocations, it is one-off during by-election and not a consistent allocation.

The allocation provided a good opportunity for the opposition parties to exploit the issue that the ruling party is often than not using their power monopoly to misuse public money to gain votes and not otherwise as reflected in the tactics employed by opposition in public campaigns to garner the support of voters.

On the other hand, though there are many more good policies that the ruling party had implemented but mostly the ruling parties were seen to practice double standards among the people and within SUPP.

BN candidate Robert Lau comes from elite SUPP and it was claimed that the elite SUPP families become very rich while ordinary Chinese need to struggle hard to make ends meet.

The KTS group is belonging to the family of the BN candidate. Practically, in our democratic system, there is nothing wrong for the group to control timber business, retailing, plantation, reforestation and print media, but the ongoing court case due to the refusal to settle NCR land taken by the company cause him to suffer no meaningful political damage.

Politics is the art of the impossible, in winning the election, strategy is important. Political parties especially politicians need starting to really stress now as the next general election are coming closer.

Sibu MP Robert Lau dies trigger 11th by-election

Sibu parliamentarian Robert Lau, 68, from the Sarawak United People's Party (Supp) passed away this morning after a protracted battle with cancer, triggering yet another by-election.

Under election laws, a by-election will have to be called within 60 days. This will be the 11th by-election in the country - and Sarawak's second - since the last general election.

Lau, who is also deputy transport minister, had been Sibu MP for five terms, since 1990.

He beat Sarawak DAP chief Wong Ho Leng and PKR's Lim Chin Chuang in a three-cornered fight at the 2008 general elections.

Lau won by a majority of 3,235 votes in 2008 by bagging 19,138 votes against Wong's 15,903 and Lim's 812.

Supp is likely to again face stiff competition from DAP in a contest that would set the tone for the upcoming state elections.

BN vs PAS in Bagan Pinang

In politics, there is no mercy.

Ironically, it is generally
believed that it is the best chance now for BN to end the opposition's winning streak by fielding Mohd Isa Abdul Samad in Bagan Pinang by-election.

Mohd Isa Abdul Samad vs Zulkefly Mohamad Omar

By picking Isa, who is popular with the grassroots, Umno is seen as riding roughshod over the voter’s sentiment. The high level of Malay support and large number of postal votes for Isa are the main factors that will cause Umno to win the race after losing 7 by-elections.

The Bagan Pinang state by-election on Oct 11 will see a straight fight between Barisan BN and PAS. BN is fielding former Menteri Besar Tan Sri Mohd Isa Abdul Samad while PAS is represented by Zulkefly Mohamad Omar, the party's state commissioner.

Returning Officer Abdul Wahab Shamsuddin announced the contest at 11.25am after the objection period had ended.

Mohd Isa, 59, was the first to arrive at the nomination centre at Port Dickson Municipal Council hall at 9.05am, naming N. Kandiah as the proposer and Kaw Yoh See as the seconder.

About 10 minutes later, Zulkefly filed in his nomination papers, with Baharom Bujang as the proposer and Sarif Kasim as the seconder.

The seat fell vacant following the death of incumbent assemblyman Azman Mohammad Noor of BN on Sept 4. In the 2008 general election, Azman defeated PAS' Ramli Ismail with a majority of 2,333 votes.

There are 13,664 registered voters in Bagan Pinang, including 4,604 postal voters in the constituency. Malays make up about 62 per cent voters while Indians and Chinese 20 and 10 per cent respectively.

It has eight polling districts namely Pekan Siliau, Teluk Kemang, Ladang Atherton, Ladang Bradwall, Kampung Bagan Pinang, Taman Eastern, Sua Betong and Si Rusa.

Straight fight between PAS and UMNO in Permatang Pasir

The Permatang Pasir state by-election scheduled for 25 Ogos 2009 is a straight fight between PAS state commissioner Mohd Salleh Man, 55, and Young Turk Rohaizat Othman, 38, from Umno.

Rohaizat Othman

Rohaizat Othman, a 38-year-old lawyer, married with one son, is a law graduate from the International Islamic University (UIA).

Mohd. Salleh

A graduate from Universiti Malaya, Mohd Salleh is self employed, previously having worked as a private school manager, a mosque official and an independent religious preacher.

Although Permatang Pasir is a PAS stronghold, but it is believed that UMNO has certain effective strategies to undermine the opposition and winning the seat.

Ironically, it does not ruled out the possibility of BN winning the seat in defending the track record in selecting the most effective strategy to manage the voters.

BN forces are believed to be well organized and have the campaign to gain the visibility and respect.

Ironically, development has long been left out in Permatang Pasir. One of strategies to be truly effective and BN has demonstrated the capacity to mainstream programming the area into the mainstream development programme.

The constituency has 20,290 voters and one postal vote, with 72.36 percent of the electorate being Malays, 25.85 percent Chinese, 1.63 percent Indians and 0.16 percent others. It has 300 new voters.

PAS won a mere 65-vote majority in Manek Urai

The results of the Manek Urai by-election in Kelantan clearly showed Najib's leadership and the diminishing influence of Nik Aziz.

Despite the constituency being a PAS stronghold in a PAS-controlled state, PAS would have won with a bigger majority, however managed to only winning with a mere 65-vote majority.

Mohd Fauzi, 50, polled 5,348 votes while Tuan Aziz, 39, obtained 5,283 votes.

Dr Mansor won the historic low turn out Penanti by-election

Dr. Mansor Othman won the historic low turnout Penanti by-election with 5,558 majorities, a whopping 6,052 out of the total of 7,100 votes and all three independents lost their deposits.

Only 7,100 people cast their votes in what is a historic low turnout - only 46.15 %. In the March 2008 general election, 82.13 % of the registered voters cast their ballots. There were a total of 15,384 registered voters in the constituency.

Nai Khan Ari, an independent who received just 494 votes while Aminah Abdullah only took 392 votes.

The reduced interest in voting is most likely due to BN supporters not coming out to vote in the by-election as BN is not contesting.

Deliberately forcing a by-election in Penanti is a political games by opposition

The opposition is playing political games by deliberately forcing a by-election.

The move was an irresponsible act and not hidden is a sheer for solid waste of public funds and the human resources.

Ironically, BN especially Umno had never afraid in battling their arch-rival, PKR, in any by-election but always take into consideration whether it benefits the people.

As a responsible and constructive opposition, the opposition should not deliberately force a by-election.

The people will realize that the opposition has shirked their responsibilities as a constructive and responsible opposition.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak does not rule out the possibility that the Barisan Nasional (BN) will not contest the by-election for the Penanti State constituency in Penang.
